“Work and Worth: A Step-by-Step Guide to Resilient Interpreting Analysis”
Workshop Description:
Negative inner dialogue, or chatter, is a barrier that prevents many students from in-depth self-assessment of their ASL and interpreting work. Work and Worth is a feedback and peer-dialogue strategy, collated from psychology research and coaching practices, that supports the development of a growth mindset. Students who use this strategy 1) develop resilience by identifying their self-worth, 2) separate self-worth from work, 3) develop a growth-mindset by shifting to non-judgmental language, 4) use tools for in-depth self-assessment, and 5) engage curiosity when assessing with peers. When instructors incorporate Work and Worth into their teaching or mentoring, they develop a space where mistakes and vulnerability are valued over perfectionism. This workshop will combine instruction and application of the Work and Worth strategy. Participants will learn tips and activities to incorporate into the classroom.
Educational Objectives:
By the end of the Work and Worth workshop, participants will be able to:
1) Identify at least 3 resources to analyze specific patterns in the work
2) Differentiate objective & non-judgmental from subjective feedback language
3) Apply work-and-worth language to a student’s work sample
Bio:
Bridget Sabatke, MS, NIC-Master, QMHI, has been an interpreter since 2005 and an interpreter educator since 2013. Ms. Sabatke was a curriculum developer with the CATIE Center’s Behavioral Health Interpreting project from 2017-2019. In 2019, she became faculty for the ASL & Interpreting department at St. Catherine University, where she is now the program director. She has presented nationally and internationally on mental health interpreting, case consultation, and feedback processes that help interpreters manage their inner critic and build resilience. Outside of work, Bridget enjoys contra dancing and spending time with her family and too many pets.
