Workshop Title:
“Beyond Equivalence: A Hands-on Workshop Using a Meaning-Based Interpreting Performance Rubric”
Workshop Description:
This highly interactive, hands-on workshop and discussion session will introduce participants to a new meaning-based interpreting assessment rubric described and outlined in Beyond Equivalence: Reconceptualizing Interpreting Performance Assessment (Winston, et al 2023). The session will begin with a lecture and discussion section outlining the rubric and walking through a guided application of it to a sample interpretation. Next, participants will work in small groups to apply the rubric to other interpreting samples. The session will conclude with a group discussion of applications of the rubric, how to discuss it with students and instructional staff, and ways to integrate it into existing programs and individual courses.
Note to participants: In order to most fully engage with the material, please bring a laptop/tablet to the session; also, feel free to bring interpreting samples that you are familiar with to work with in applying the rubric in the small group session. These videos will only be used in small groups and will not be shared in any other way.

Educational Objectives:
After completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1) Describe the similarities/differences between assessment of language and assessment of interpreting
2) Describe and explain the three primary domains of the Meaning-Based Interpreting Performance Rubric
3) Apply the rubric to samples of interpreting and explain areas of strength and areas for improvement
4) Devise ways to explain the rubric and applications and benefits to various stakeholders (consumers, students, instructors, etc.)
Bio:
Robert G. Lee has been interpreting, teaching, and researching for over 35 years. He is currently Staff ASL Interpreter at Harvard University. From 2008-21, Robert was Senior Lecturer in British Sign Language & Deaf Studies and led the MA/Postgraduate Diploma in BSL/English Interpreting and Translation at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston, UK. He has presented keynote addresses, workshops, professional seminars, and conference papers in North and South America and Europe. He has published extensively on linguistics and interpreting. Along with Peter Llewellyn-Jones, Robert co-developed the Role-Space model of interpreting (www.rolespace.online). Through collaboration with Betsy Winston, Christine Monikowski, Rico Peterson, and Laurie Swabey, the Beyond Equivalence Meaning-Based Interpreting Performance Rubric was developed and subsequently published by Gallaudet Press (2023). Robert is thrilled to be co-presenting this session with Rayni Plaster!
Rayni Plaster, MSCJ, CDI, SC:L is a nationally recognized interpreter educator, mentor, and presenter with more than 20 years of experience in the interpreting profession. She serves as a staff interpreter with Washington Hospital Center, and previously at Gallaudet Interpreting Service. Rayni has trained interpreters across the United States and internationally. She was part of the inaugural cohort for the National Consortium of Interpreter Education Centers (NCIEC) Deaf Interpreter Curriculum training initiative and has contributed as an expert advisor for interpreter education and legal interpreting curriculum development. Her work focuses on meaning-based interpretation, Deaf-centered interpreting practices, interpreter collaboration, and communication access across diverse settings and populations. Rayni brings a practical, culturally grounded, and highly interactive approach to professional development for interpreters and interpreter educators.
