“Mapping Meaning and Decisions: A Deaf-Centered Integration of IMI and DC-S for Supervision and Team Practice”
Workshop Description:
This interactive workshop introduces a Deaf-centered integration of the Interactive Model of Interpreting (IMI) and Demand-Control Schema (DC-S) to support culturally responsive supervision and interpreter decision-making. Participants will engage in hands-on case analysis, visual mapping activities, and collaborative discussions that highlight Deaf interpreter cognitive processing and interactional meaning. The session emphasizes practical tools that can be applied immediately in supervision and mixed interpreting team environments.
Educational Objectives:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1) Analyze interpreting scenarios using an integrated IMI and DC-S framework to identify interactional meaning, demands, and controls.
2) Map cognitive and discourse factors that influence Deaf interpreter decision-making in supervision and team interpreting contexts.
3) Apply a Deaf-centered visual analysis tool to evaluate and respond to complex interpreting situations.
4) Demonstrate collaborative problem-solving by working in small groups to analyze and propose responses to real-world interpreting case scenarios.
Bio:
Daniel S. Gough, PhD, is a Deaf interpreter, educator, and mentor with more than 20 years of experience in ASL, Deaf Studies, and interpreter education. He has interpreted nationally and internationally and currently works as a Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) with AMN Healthcare Interpreting, supporting healthcare access for Deaf communities. He also mentors emerging interpreters through programs at Berkeley City College, Santa Rosa Junior College, and Ohlone College. With advanced degrees in interpreting and Deaf education, Daniel is committed to Deaf-centered access, excellence in interpreting practice, and preparing the next generation of interpreters.
