“Defining the Role of a Mentor: Laying the Groundwork for Effective Mentoring”
Workshop Description:
This presentation will explore research conducted by Mikela Jordon entitled “Defining the Role of a Mentor.” The focus of the research is to better understand the role of a mentor based on current mentoring practices in the ASL-English interpreting field. The research explores what quantitative and qualitative indicators represent an experienced practitioner, what structures inform mentor training and types of training available for mentors, and what skills are expected of mentors. Research was collected using a mixed-methods approach including a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The results of the research will be published in June 2026 in the publication of the research project.
Educational Objectives:
1) Explore what quantitative and qualitative factors determine who is an experienced practitioner.
2) Discuss what structures inform mentor training and the types of training available for mentors.
3) Explore what skills are expected of mentors.
Bio:
Mikela M. Jordon, M.A., NIC, BEI: Advanced is an American Sign Language-English interpreter with four years of experience in the field working in various settings with a focus on medical, legal, and performance interpreting. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Sign Language Interpreting from Bethel University – Indiana and is a recent graduate of Western Oregon University, where she received a Master of Arts in Interpreting Studies with a focus on teaching. Her professional interests include mentoring, supervision, and ethical decision-making. In addition to interpreting, Mikaela has experience as a mentor and program administrator. Currently, she serves as the coordinator for a training and mentoring program with the goal of providing resources and support for interpreters in her community.
