How is continuing education for interpreters being transformed? In 2015, the membership of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID) passed a new requirement to require continuing education to include focus on power, privilege and oppression (PPO). In 2019, RID began tracking this and so it is a practical concern to look at how to best provide these learning opportunities. What are best practices for teaching interpreters about PPO? This poster session will report on a MA action research project (Bowen-Bailey, 2019) that explored this question.
In the research, I talked with three groups of stakeholders: people who were connected to the two sponsors of the motion which created the requirement (Interpreters and Transliterators of Color & the Deaf caucus); approved sponsors for the Certification Maintenance Program; and RID-certified interpreters who are subject to the new requirement. The poster session will discuss initial findings and recommendations.
All aspects of the project were conducted in ASL. So, the poster session will also discuss the benefits and challenges of undertaking research in this way. Please come and join in the discussion.

Doug Bowen-Bailey is an instructional designer for the CATIE Center at St. Catherine University working with the Graduation to Certification program. He graduated in 2019 from St. Catherine’s MA in Interpreting Studies and Communication Equity program. He also serves as the webmaster for CIT. His interests include racial and social justice, effective online education, and mentoring. He lives in Duluth, MN overlooking the waters of Lake Superior.
