About the Online Workshop
This online workshop will be a review of the model of interpretation that informed the text, Learning to Interpret. An overview will be given of some of the challenges faced by the presenter, a sign language interpreter educator, in terms of structuring his curriculum, creating subjective assessments, and scaffolding the process of teaching. Terms such as literal meaning will be defined as well as the concept of “breaking from form.” Various theoretical models taken from spoken and signed language translation and interpretation theory will be reviewed throughout the presentation as support for the model. Participants will be asked to engage in teaching and assessment activities created by the author and do create and share a teaching or assessment activity either individually or in groups to apply some of the theories described.
The workshop will have three components.
- Course content will be available in Canvas and will include videos, supplemental materials and discussions.
- The author will be interviewed by a CIT member about the book Learning to Interpret: Working from English into American Sign Language and how teachers and or mentors can incorporate it into their practice.
- A live Question and Answer session with Campbell McDermid on Wed, February 26. (If you are not able to participate in the live session, you will be able to view the recording of this video.)

At the end of the workshop participants will be able to:
- describe the characteristics of a literal target text
- outline strategies for creating a dynamically equivalent target text
- create a teaching activity or assessment tool that incorporates a model of meaning that is literal or dynamically equivalent.

About the Facilitator
Campbell McDermid, Ph.D.
Campbell McDermid, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina Greensboro in the Professions in Deafness program. He has worked as a literacy instructor and College English Professor with Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and taught ASL-English interpretation since 1997. He draws upon various teaching methods such as Grammar-Translation and the Direct Method and various theories in translation and interpretation, such as Nida’s (1964) conceptualization of dynamic equivalence and Explicitation theory (Blum-Kulka, 1986; Gumul, 2006). Campbell’s research and publications encompass curriculum design, translation theory, Groupthink, pragmatics, cohesion, and assessment. His peer-reviewed scholarship include a recent publication, Learning to Interpret (2018) published by RIT Press.
