This Assistant Director/Lecturer position begins August 2020 and is a non-tenure-track appointment with a one-year renewable contract. The person in this position willcoordinate the ASL/Deaf Studies component of the ASL/English Interpreting program, revise/update the ASL/Deaf Studies curriculum as needed, serve as advisor to students in the program and to the student-run ASL Club, supervise part-time ASL/Deaf Studies instructors and ASL lab instructors, supervise the ASL tutor(s), assist with recruitment efforts, help coordinate program events, maintain and support connections with the Deaf community, and assess the ASL fluency of students new to the program. The person will alsoteach six courses in ASL/Deaf Studies and may teach courses in ASL/English translation or interpretation (if needed and appropriate). The teaching load is 3 courses per semester and courses range from introductory to advanced courses in ASL/Deaf Studies.
The program has met the National Interpreter Education Standards since 1999, was the first interpreting program in the country to be accredited by the Collegiate Commission on Interpreter Education (CCIE) in 2007 and was the first program to be re-accredited in 2017. Opportunities exist to develop innovative approaches to teaching, engagement, and experiential learning in this nationally recognized program.
Candidates must have a master’s degree in Deaf Studies, American Sign Language, Linguistics, Interpretation, or a related field; a Ph.D. is preferred. Candidates who are multicultural, have native or near-native fluency in ASL, and are Deaf are especially encouraged to apply. Evidence of teaching excellence and academic contributions to the fields of ASL and Deaf Studies are required. Also, American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA) certification is preferred. Certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc (RID) would also be beneficial. Comfort with a Learning Management Systems such as Canvas or Blackboard and other technology-based teaching tools such as GoReact is also useful.
