| Position Summary | The Department of World Languages and Cultures at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) invites applications for a non-tenure track Lecturer position in American Sign Language/English Interpreting to begin August 1, 2017 RESPONSIBILITIES: • Teach undergraduate courses in ASL and Interpreting studies • Supervise students; provide academic advising to majors in collaboration with School of Liberal Arts Academic Advisors and professional mentoring • Participate in ASL placement interviews • Participate in department and university faculty activities and professional services • Other duties as assigned by the program director SALARY: Competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. Appointment includes generous medical insurance and retirement benefits paid in whole or in part by Indiana University. The School of Liberal Arts http://liberalarts.iupui.edu is composed of 12 humanities and social science departments and 10 interdepartmental programs. It has a resident faculty of about 250, a large and well-qualified part-time faculty, and about 1,500 majors. The School of Liberal Arts serves a very diverse population of students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. IUPUI’s Program in ASL/English Interpreting is housed in the World Languages and Cultures Department in the School of Liberal Arts http://liberalarts.iupui.edu/wlac/ which offers undergraduate majors in ASL/English Interpreting, Spanish, French, and German, minors in Classical Studies, Arabic, Chinese, and Japanese Studies, and provides courses in Italian and Latin. The Department also offers a Graduate Certificate in Translation Studies in French, German, and Spanish and a Master of Arts in Teaching of Spanish (M.A.T.) The Program in ASL/English Interpreting offers a Bachelor of Science degree, as well as a Certificate in ASL/English Interpreting for students who have already completed a bachelor’s degree. |
| Basic Qualifications | • Required: MA in teaching ASL or related field, college level ASL teaching experience. Preferred: Ph.D. in Interpreting, ASL studies, Deaf Studies, Curriculum and Instruction, Linguistics, Education or related fields; ASLTA or CDI certification; experience in assessment, distance learning, curriculum development, and teaching experience with adult learners • Knowledge and skills in pedagogy and content relevant to interpreting education, second language acquisition, and/or ASL studies • An ability to lecture and conduct daily department business in ASL, at the time of application • RID, AVLIC, or ASLTA certification or documented equivalent for international applicants • Evidence of involvement with Deaf community and professional organizations such as NAD, NAOBI, RID, CIT and ASLTA. |
