The Deaf Studies faculty members work collaboratively with other teacher education colleagues in the Department of Theory and Practice in Teacher Education (TPTE) within the highly-ranked College of Education, Health and Human Sciences at the University of Tennessee. Position
TPTE is seeking applications to fill a non-tenure track position as a Clinical Assistant Professor or Lecturer in ASL Education (ASL ED). The position begins August 1, 2021.
Required Qualifications
Required qualifications include: (1) an earned Master’s degree in a related field; (2) fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) as demonstrated with a minimum Advanced or higher on the Sign Language Proficiency Interview(SLPI) or 4.0 on the ASL Proficiency Interview (ASLPI ); (3) knowledge of the ACTFL and ASLTA Standards (4) active participation with professional organizations at the state and/or national level; (5) experience in regard to cultural, linguistic, gender, and ethnic diversity; and (6) evidence of potential to teach and supervise undergraduate and graduate students in ASL ED.
Desired Qualifications
Desired qualifications include: (1) at least 3 years teaching experience in Pre K-12; (2) history of successfully teaching and supervising undergraduate and/or graduate students; (3) fluency in ASL as demonstrated with Advanced to Superior Plus on the SLPI or 4.0+ to 5 on the ASLPI; (4) an earned doctorate in ASL, Linguistics, Interpreting, Education, Language and Culture, Second Language Learning, or a highly related field; (5) certification in ASL teaching by ASLTA; and (6) experience in the use of Canvas or other learning management systems, and application of technologies such as video editing skills and web development
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities include: (1) teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in ASL and ASL ED; (2) supervising students in teaching placements and conducting informal/formal evaluations; and (3) advising students.
Salary
This 9-month non-tenure track appointment is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. There is possibility of promotion in rank after five successful years at starting rank.
