Interpreting R0001402 Assistant Professor of Interpretation: ASL/English Interpreter Education Program
he Interpreter Education Program (IEP) at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock invites applications for a 9-month, tenure-track faculty position as an Assistant Professor of Interpretation (job #R0001402), beginning August 2021. UA Little Rock’s IEP directs one U.S. Dept. of Education grant from the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) for 2017-2021 in preservice interpreter preparation. The IEP offers a Bachelor of Arts in Interpretation: ASL/English with a Minor in Educational Interpreting, an Associate of Science in ASL Studies, a Sign Language Studies Minor for non-majors, and ASL satisfies the UA Little Rock second language requirement. This position is governed by state and federal laws, and agency/institution policy.
The IEP has been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Interpreter Education (CCIE) since 2010. The program draws students not only from in-state but also from surrounding states and across the nation. The program prepares students for community and virtual settings and uniquely offers courses in interpreting for persons who are Deaf-blind, Hard of Hearing, and for children. Course include service learning, mentoring, and simulation in community settings as well as a capstone Internship experience. The program contains a fully equipped lab, a student Sign Language Club, and is near the Arkansas School for the Deaf.
The IEP is housed in the School of Counseling, Human Performance and Rehabilitation (CHPR) in the College of Business, Health and Human Services (CBHHS). Required Education and Experience:
Earned doctorate in interpretation, linguistics, the deafness-related or appropriate field of study (ABD considered); National interpreter certification or other applicable professional certification; Strong language skills, both English and ASL; Experience teaching ASL and/or interpreter education; Intercultural communication skills for interaction with diverse populations.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Experience with curriculum development; Experience with program assessment; Evidence of scholarly productivity;
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret journal and technical procedures; Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from individuals, groups of students, and chairs/directors; Experience with delivery of distance education via online learning platforms; Strong organizational and management skills Ability to work in a team.
