Department: Communicative Disorders & Deaf Education (COMD)Position Summary The Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education at Utah State University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month position as a Lecturer in American Sign Language (ASL). This is a non-tenure track position beginning August 2015. The successful candidate will have a background in ASL teaching and provide instruction in ASL, from beginner to advanced levels, to Deaf Education majors, ASL minors, ASL Teaching minors, and other interested students. Responsibilities 1. Teach 3-4 basic and advanced American Sign Language classes (12-16 credit hours) per semester (Fall and Spring) to Deaf Education majors, ASL Teaching Minors, ASL minors, and other students interested in ASL 2. Supervise the ASL Laboratory 3. Maintain necessary records related to the ASL classes and assess student ASL competencies 5. Present professional information to the profession and the public 6. Participate in state and national professional associations Minimum Qualifications 1. Master’s degree in a field related to ASL teaching 2. Advanced or superior proficiency in American Sign Language with demonstrated ability to converse fluently in high-level professional and academic conversations 3. A minimum of three years’ experience teaching ASL on the secondary or higher education level 4. Ability to work effectively as a member of a higher education institution team 5. Knowledge of how to use the videophone, relay operator, and the video relay system Preferred Qualifications 1. Five years of teaching ASL in higher education 2. State or national certification with American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA), Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and/or National Interpreter Certification (NIC) 3. Master’s degree in a field related to education of the deaf 4. Willingness to work within an interdisciplinary team framework 5. Experience with distance education delivery; learning management systems; computer software programs (i.e. PowerPoint, Word, etc.) 6. Experience in ASL curriculum development 7.
