Position Title: Associate Professor & Director, Department of American Sign Language & Interpreting Studies

Job Summary/Basic Function: Strategic administrative leadership and oversight of the Department of American Sign Language & Interpreting Studies (ASLIS) that designs, develops, and delivers ASL and interpreting programs, which include undergraduate and graduate academic programs, offered in on-campus and online formats. Solicit and implement federal grant-funded programs. Plan and manage multiple budgets, HR processes, reporting and other associated academic department responsibilities.
Qualifications and Experience:
Minimum Qualifications:
This full-time 12-month tenure-track position requires an earned doctorate in interpreting, linguistics, education, or an appropriately related field from an accredited university; a minimum of five years of educational administration; three years of relevant teaching experience; and three years of experience in distance-delivered instruction. Evidence of strategic planning, budget management, HR processes, reporting functions, and other associated responsibilities of an academic department are expected. Qualified applicants are expected to document: (a) nationally recognized professional credentials in the field of interpreting and/or ASL instruction; (b) quality scholarship; (c) service to the university, and/or the field of ASL instruction and/or interpreter education; (d) a student-centered focus; and, (e) a commitment to inclusion and diversity.
Preferred Qualifications:
Exemplary writing, verbal and presentation communication (e.g., English and American Sign Language) and exceptional interpersonal skills are critical for this position as collaboration across the university and the nation are a vital component of the Department’s work. As part of this skill set, staff development and team building experiences are sought since online academic programs and federal grants typically engage individuals from around the US. Prior grant writing and management experience is desired, as is national and/or state leadership experience. In addition, the ability to organize and facilitate small and large conferences, learning events, and projects is valuable. Experience conducting action research is also highly desirable; as is a familiarity with the CCIE accreditation expectations and procedures. Finally, a sophisticated knowledge of technology applications in educational programs will be necessary.
Position Description:
The College of Education and Behavioral Sciences invites applications for a full-time 12-month Associate Professor & Director position that is primarily administrative in nature but will have teaching responsibilities. The position does include an expectation of summer employment. Primary responsibilities are the strategic administrative leadership and oversight of the Department of American Sign Language & Interpreting Studies. The current academic program offerings are: (a) the ASL I-IV liberal arts core series, (b) the ASL Minor, (c) the on-campus and online BA in ASL-English Interpretation, and (d) the online MA in Teaching ASL (http://www.unco.edu/doit). This position requires extensive interactions with community stakeholders (i.e., Deaf Community, interpreters, state and professional agencies), as well as internal collaborative opportunities that exist with other departments/schools and their respective faculty as well as the university community at large. The successful candidate will also be expected to conduct and publish research, as well as participate in national, state, College, and University-wide professional activities.

Salary and Benefits:
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Benefits may include health, life, and dental insurance, as well as a selection of several defined contribution retirement programs. Other benefits may be available based on position.

Satisfactory completion of a background check, educational check, and authorization to work in the United States is required after a conditional offer of employment has been made. If a degree is required, original transcripts must be submitted within one (1) month of hire.
Tuition Grants for Dependents:
Dependents and spouses of UNC Employees who are employed as 0.5 FTE or above are entitled to and eligible for Dependent Tuition Grants. Dependent Tuition Grants will cover in-state tuition charges and undergraduate students must register for the College Opportunity Fund to receive the grant. Further requirements may exist.
