GENERAL SUMMARY: | The Deaf Studies Department is seeking to expand its program. It houses both the American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf Studies curricula within the Deaf Studies program. We currently offer a variety of levels of ASL courses, from American Sign Language I to American Sign Language VI. Courses in Deaf Studies are also offered. ASL classes are limited to twenty students and the focus is an interactive, proficiency-oriented pedagogical approach. The HCC Deaf Studies faculty is committed to offering a vibrant and innovative curriculum that includes advanced classes and addresses different learning styles for our diverse student population. |

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: | Master’s Degree in ASL instruction, Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, or closely related field; native or near native fluency in ASL; ASLTA certification or ability to obtain certification within one year of hire; demonstrates effective teaching skills including interactive teaching and current pedagogical strategies; excellent written skills in English; teaching experience in higher education; commitment to teaching a student body diverse in abilities, age, ethnicity, race and sexual orientation; ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body. *NOTE: A teaching demonstration will be part of the interview process. |
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: | Community college teaching experience; experience with using multimedia technology in the classroom; interest and ability to create community-based events; experience in administrative tasks such as writing course proposals, syllabus design and annual reports. |
