General Information

The Department of Interpretation and Translation at Gallaudet University consists of a variety of degree programs – Bachelors of Interpretation (BAI), Masters of Interpretation (MAI), and Doctor of Philosophy in Translation and Interpreting Studies. In these programs, students engage in courses that advance their professional skills and theoretical knowledge of the field of Translation and Interpreting Studies in signed language interpreting, with a focus on American Sign Language-English interpreting.

Qualifications

  1. Earned master degree in a language-related field.
  2. Current RID, CASLI (AVLIC), or ASLTA certification (or documented equivalent for international applicants).
  3. Experience in teaching American Sign Language-English interpreting (e.g., theory, skills, professional practice, history of profession).
  4. Knowledge about current pedagogical practices in interpreter and/or translator education.
  5. Excellent American Sign Language (ASL) skills, including the ability to lecture and conduct daily department business in ASL.
  6. Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills.
  7. Experience as an interpreter/translator practitioner (preferred).

Responsibilities

  1. Teach ASL-English interpretation and translation courses to undergraduate students. Note: Teaching load will be determined based on level of responsibility (See #2 below).
  2. Organize and oversee mentoring, field experience, and pro bono interpreting experiences for students.
  3. Mentor students on ASL development with individualized, diagnostic feedback.
  4. Engage in professional development opportunities of current pedagogy and best practices in teaching interpretation and translation.
  5. Participate in department and university faculty activities and professional service.
  6. Perform other duties as assigned by the chair.

Compensation

Rank and salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
