Faculty Member, Sign Language Interpreter Preparation

Position Summary:

The faculty member for the Sign Language Interpreter Preparation program reports to the Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs/Dean of Arts and Sciences and delivers high quality instruction to students. Faculty are expected to teach 15 credits per semester, demonstrate innovation and excellence in curriculum and co-curricular planning, foster an atmosphere of active intellectual and creative engagement in student achievement in and out of the classroom, and contribute to the advancement and overall welfare of the College community. Primary teaching responsibilities are in the Sign Language Interpreter Preparatory program, but the faculty member may be called upon to teach courses in American Sign Language as well.   This position may be expected to serve as the program manager of the Sign Language Interpreter Preparation A.A.S. degree, certificate and all other related credentials. This assignment will receive reassigned time to perform the duties of the program manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following are the functions essential to performing this job:

  1. Teach Sign Language Interpreting courses
  2. Facilitate student mastery of core learning outcomes using the most relevant pedagogical and scholarly tools available.
  3. Contribute to the development, planning, and implementation of a high quality curriculum.
  4. Actively engage students in critical thinking, meta-cognitive processes, and advancement of critical communication skills.
  5. Model and cultivate open-minded inquiry, an appreciation for diverse perspectives, and creative problem solving.
  6. Provide service to the College and community to support and to enhance the College mission.
  7. Serve on committees and participate in department meetings.
  8. Maintain currency in academic discipline and pedagogy by actively participating in professional organizations at the state, regional, and national levels and by engaging in other professional development opportunities.
  9. Uphold and contribute to the achievement of the Frederick Community College Strategic Plan.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Master’s degree
  2. National certification recognized by Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (i.e. NIC, CI, CT, CSC, NAD III-V, CDI)
  3. Prior instructional experience in a classroom or professional development setting
  4. Five years working as an interpreter

Desired Qualifications:

  1. Master’s degree or higher in deaf education, American Sign Language Interpreting, or related field; or a minimum of ten years experience in the field of interpreting
  2. Two years of college teaching experience
  3. Evidence of excellent professional communication skills
  4. Evidence of engagement with professional associations and/or the deaf community
  5. Experience providing oversight of an academic program
  6. Demonstrated ability to use varying styles and approaches that reflect an understanding and acceptance of differences in students’ learning needs, experiences, and cultural backgrounds
