Position Summary
General Responsibilities:
The faculty member shall be responsible for the following: coordination of instructional programs and/or teaching assigned classes under the supervision of the area dean; helping students fulfill their maximum potential in mastering course content; assessing student learning outcomes; maintaining a thorough and up-to-date knowledge in their regular teaching field; continuing professional development; utilizing current technology in the performance of job duties; maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position; assisting with articulation and curriculum development and review; serving on college committees and participating in faculty governance including accreditation and student co-curricular activities; assuming other responsibilities as assigned by the area dean; fulfilling other duties and responsibilities of a full-time faculty member as outlined in the college faculty handbook.
The assignment between these two roles may be adjusted based on student, department, and program needs.
Assignment Responsibilities
The instructional assignment may include, but is not limited to:
- Teaching courses at all levels in the Interpreter Preparation Program (IPP).
- Teaching other courses offered in the Deaf Culture and ASL Studies Department.
- Leading the IPP department in the development of curriculum and scheduling of classes.
- Enhancing course development.
- Coordinating and maintaining student and community interactions with the IPP.
The coordinator assignment may include, but is not limited to:
- Recruiting, training, and overseeing the work of adjunct professors, student assistants, peer teachers, ambassadors, recruiters, and mentors.
- Coordinating placement and supervision of IPP students’ fieldwork and mock interpreting experiences.
- Recruiting and screening IPP program applicants.
- Collaborating with Deaf Culture and ASL Studies colleagues to develop and coordinate curriculum between Deaf Culture and ASL Studies programs and the IPP.
- Scheduling staff, facilities, and equipment for use by students.
- Managing and reporting on various budgets used to facilitate program updates and enhancements.
- Communicating accurate and timely program information and policies to students.
- Coordinating various types of community outreach and CTE program marketing, and post-graduate placement efforts.
The instructional assignment may include day, evening, online, hybrid, weekend, and/or off campus classes.
Minimum Qualifications
- Have a master’s degree from an accredited institution, completed by July 2, 2018, in American Sign Language – English Interpreting or related field, AND two years professional experience in Sign Language Studies/Interpreting; OR, hold a California Community College Instructor’s Credential in the discipline area; OR, the equivalent.*
- Hold and maintain a national interpreter certification recognized by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or the Association of Visual Language Interpreters of Canada (AVLIC), by July 2, 2018.
- Have sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles.
