How We Communicate Online

This fall, my daughter, Sylvie, went off to college which has my mind wondering how I could be old enough for that to happen.  (My left knee is pretty sure I am old enough.) In addition to my own emotional adjustment to having one of our kids out of the nest, it has provided me an opportunity to learn from my daughter in new ways.  Many CIT members teach students who are the age of Sylvie – and so watching what connects with her is helpful for me in thinking how we as a profession can connect with our students.
This is particularly true when it comes to how language is used online and in media.  Sylvie recently shared with a video essay by Evan Puschak, a.k.a., the Nerdwriter.  The video looks at President-elect Donald Trump’s use of Twitter.   For many people, the 2016 election raised questions about what people heard in the words used by the candidates.  Salena Zito, in an article in the Atlantic, was one of the first commentators to note that when Trump made claims that were not based in fact, “the press takes him literally, but not seriously; his supporters take him seriously, but not literally.”
So, as we approach the beginning of the Trump administration, here is a video that shows a millenial use of discourse analysis to take our president seriously and attempt to make sense of the political landscape.  It is worth watching to both better understand the U.S. President and our students who are digital natives.

As a bonus, here is a link to a previous essay on how Trump answers a question.  Both of the videos are great examples of the use of discourse analysis in a different context that may be relevant to our students – and may help us to understand the world a little better ourselves.  I know that the chance to keep learning, even if it is my college-age daughter who is teaching me, that helps me still feel young.
