by Dr. Christine Monkowski
Fulbright ScholarIn January 2013, Christine Monikowski, PhD, was selected by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board for a Fulbright Specialists Grant in Australia and New Zealand. Chris is a Professor at Rochester Institute of Technology/National Technical Institute for the Deaf. She has taught in the interpreter education program there for the past 20 years. The Fulbright was hosted by the University of Newcastle’s Renwick Centre for Research and Professional Education/Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children’s (RIDBC) in Sydney.
The Fulbright Program, America’s flagship international educational exchange activity, is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Over its 60 years of existence, thousands of U.S. faculty and professionals have taught, studied or conducted research abroad, and thousands of their counterparts from other countries have engaged in similar activities in the United States. The Fulbright Specialist, a short-term complement to the core Fulbright Scholar, sends U.S. faculty and professionals to serve as expert consultants on curriculum, faculty development, institutional planning and related subjects at overseas academic institutions for a period of 2 to 6 weeks.
From April 22 to May 30, Chris provided a series of workshops/presentations to educators, sign language interpreters, and school support staff throughout Australia (Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide) and New Zealand (Auckland). Topics included Discourse Analysis, Language Myths, and Six Mirrors of the Classroom. In addition, Chris had the opportunity to meet with numerous administrators and university faculty; with our Aussie colleagues, Della Goswell (Sydney) and Karen Bontempo (Perth); and with “heaps” of professional interpreters, parents of Deaf children, and members of very active Deaf communities in many cities. Meeting with professional counterparts, discussing opportunities to collaborate, investigating the possibility of future linkages with a variety of institutions…the experience of a lifetime.
